Khiva is one of the oldest cities in the East, founded, according to one legend, by Shem, the son of the biblical Noah. Khiva flourished from the 16th to the 18th centuries, when it became the capital of the powerful Khiva Khanate. The city's final form took shape in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The old part of Ichan Kala, surrounded by a powerful, high fortress wall, is an open-air museum. Ichan Kala is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The administrative and religious buildings are clad in colorful tiles with incredibly beautiful patterns. A full-day excursion to Khiva includes two 1.5-hour flights.
